Locating marine mammals 25x faster thanks to a Canadian startup

Updated: Mar 6

Montreal, March 10th 2023 – It will now be possible to detect marine mammals, such as whales, walruses, seals, and polar bears, 25x faster thanks to a Canadian technology based on artificial intelligence developed by Whale Seeker. Read the full article here.

The use of artificial intelligence makes it possible to conduct more efficient and reliable analyses than those done manually, as is currently the case. A study conducted by the Aquatic Research Division of Fisheries and Oceans Canada and the Canadian start-up Whale Seeker reveals that the artificial intelligence tool called Möbius, developed by Whale Seeker, provides significant efficiency gains in aerial image analysis.

Möbius was able to analyze 5,500 images in only 53 hours, whereas it took researchers 1,300 hours to do the same amount of work manually. This productivity gain is coupled with by superior reliability of the analyses carried out. Thus, this technology considerably accelerates the image analysis process while ensuring a higher level of reliability in the analyses rendered.

A useful tool to reduce risks and better protect marine diversity

Detecting animals, such as whales and seals, has always been a difficult task. While this has been done manually until now, the use of artificial intelligence technologies such as Möbius will allow us to be significantly more effective in protecting endangered species, facilitating the movement of commercial vessels, and avoiding unnecessary closures of fishing areas.

For example, Möbius can provide marine industries, such as the shipping sector and fisheries, with access to fast and reliable data that helps reduce risks to marine mammals and promote sustainable business practices.

Mobius can contribute to the Canadian government's goal of protecting 30% of Canada's marine territory by 2030. The technology allows for large-scale, automated surveillance, even in the most remote areas of the Arctic. It is clear that solution like Whale Seeker's technology promotes the protection of the environment and economic development.

It is worth noting that the success of biodiversity protection policies depends intimately on the ability of biologists to accurately collect and analyze data quickly on animal populations.

Quotes

“Many of the marine mammal inventories we conduct are based on manual analysis of aerial photographs. One of the limitations of this method is the time it takes to read and process the images. We believe that an automated solution, such as Möbius, could speed up data analysis, contributing to sustainable management of marine mammal populations.”

- Dr. Cortney Watt, co-author and researcher at Fisheries and Oceans Canada

“This is an unprecedented step forward in the protection and detection of marine mammals. The development of technological solutions for large-scale ocean monitoring is essential for the sustainable management of marine populations. Not only does our study demonstrate the relevance of an artificial intelligence-based tool, but also the potential use it may have for wildlife managers and stakeholders in the ocean and marine environment.“

- Emily Charry Tissier, Whale Seeker’s CEO
